Rockstar French Pedicure

About two weeks ago I had a very interesting pedi job done, it's what I call the 'Rockstar French Pedicure' ... fiery red, black and a hint of glittery silver, bold and glam. I'm totally loving it! Kudos to the newly opened Lacquer Couture at Bangsar Shopping Centre. Well, it's almost fading now, next round maybe I'll try fuschsia and deep purple ....

Rockstar toes!

Terrific Turquoise Tips

Once in a while I deviate from my usual nail colors and go for something that shocks the system. I enjoy making people go "wah" *gasp*
One of my favorite nail colors, unfortunately, is not very wearable for day to day ..... presenting OPI Teal the Cows Come Home. This is actually a past seasonal shade, when I discovered it many moons ago, it was actually one of the last piece so I decided to make it mine. I had good reason to wear this yesterday as I had to match a Turquoise dress for a wedding dinner.

OPI Teal the Cows Come Home on me digits.

OPI Teal the Cows Come Home on me toes, methinks the manicurist did a good job. Credit to Colour Culture Bangsar Village II for a job well done!

There is one thing I'd like to highlight though; the shade name! It's abit the tak betul. Technically this is not TEAL, it's TURQUOISE, no? See below chart, I got the shade swatches off Google Images and placed them side by side for comparison. Please feel free to enlighten me if I'm wrong. I love both shades and I think they go so well together. I guess it doesn't really matter what they call it, as long as it's gorgeous.

Vintage Cars for Beauty?

I was at Bangsar Village this morning and I came across this .... a vintage car dressed up for the sun!

It appears to be a marketing gimmic by Lancome, promoting their UV Expert skincare. They had promoter girls going around passing out samples on the street in return for database. The car was part of the entourage.

I was asking my hubby what make of car this was and he was like "Oh man I really suck in the vintage car department" So here you go, I really have no idea what manner of car this is. But it's a really cute concept. Vintage cars signifies a cult passion and a touch of eccentric class ... representative of the brand personality perhaps? I guess they are also probably trying to say you'll be safe from the sun even in a top-down convertible, UV expert = sun block! Clever clever hoh? *applause*

I bet they paid the owner alot of money to sticker up his precious vintage car like this!

If you're curious what Lancome is launching, check out So Loverly, they have a Lancome contest thingy going on as well.

Will you let brands sticker up your car for money? What kind of brands would you allow to pimp up your car? Or what kind of brands / products would you NOT want on your car? I know some guys will gladly let Durex have a go with theirs!

Birthday Surprise

Yippeeee... it's November again .... it's the time for endless parties and lotsa pressies, you know all my friends just love to remind me ... and reiterate ... and repeat ... and nag ... and drive the point home about how old I am becoming *sigh*

And this year among one of the earliest b'day gift is from fellow blogger babe Beatrice .... I'm so touched by her thoughtfulness I just have to tell the world. Look at what she gave me ... a merry package of Stila sweetness ...

The "magazine" cover palette consist of a blusher and 3 eye shadow colors, all very sweet and natural and totally oh-so-wearable. Looking at this makes me feel young ... young-er *sigh*

The Stila It Gloss (Inviting) is peachy-orangy, but sheer enough for everyday use ... it will actually go pretty well with an orangy blouse I have. Beatrice did a great review on these stuff here.

The It Gloss adds to my modest but hopefully growing collection of glossies ... a girl just gotta have glossies and these are among my favorites ...

Ah my beloved glossies .... how shall I rate thee?

  1. The super-est glossiest shiniest is the Stila Lip Glaze in Apricot (twisty pen), third from left, great for no-makeup days and smells fruitilicious.
  2. Chanel Aqualumiere(#66) wins hands down as the most-worthy-of-public-display, plus the really natural shade can't go wrong any day.
  3. The Revlon glosses are highly pigmented; great on its own with a sexy shine. I have Nude Peach and Glossy Rose.
  4. Stage Wondergloss in Penelope is my current fav; expert brush tip in a natural shade plus a yummy scent.
  5. And now I have a new Stila ... in a shade I don't have ... coolie doolie!

Do I need more glossies .... honestly NO because I end up buying the same kinda shades anyway, and no one can tell the diff between one to another when I am wearing either of the above... but should I get an itchy-gloss attack, and I will, I am, after all a girl who needs her glossies... I think I'll go for these below .... so pretty ... pweeeeetty ... *licking lips*

Wish List for Glossies ....

So for those who wanna come and remind me how OLD I am becoming, you got the wish list ... now all you need is a ribbon ... hehe ;)

Ozmosis Day Spa RM50 Voucher

Ozmosis Day Spa RM50 Voucher: up for grabs…just post a comment or message me with your email or some mode of contact. If you can arrange pick up from me (at Glenmarie on weekdays) it would be good, otherwise I will just mail it to you. It's valid for 3 months from 24th July 2008. The spa is in Bangsar (contact details on website, click on name with hyperlink), nice poshy place and pretty expensive from what I hear. I just don't have the time for an all day spa and by the time I do, the voucher will expire… so I will do the world a favor. Anyway I have not been there nor tried their services and I am not affiliated with them at all.

I actually got this voucher (in a last night a party hosted by TSB at Bangsar, one of the outlets owned by Gastrodome (also own La Bodega, ring a bell?) Anyway I realize that I am way too old for crowded parties. But then again, half the people at the 'upstairs' party area were way older than me… so it's probably not age alone but more of a 'refining' and 'mellowing' of the senses. Besides, it was loud, hot, stuffy and people were just jostling for a bit of air. I can smell every body scent and feel everyone's damp skin as we squeeze past each other. This violates my personal space and I'm not sure if that's my idea of fun. Free booze and finger food galore does not appeal to me, unfortunately. But the party was a success from the overwhelming response, so kudos to Gastrodome.

So I now admit and confess that I am no longer a party animal. Sigh I think my idea of a party is a quiet dinner in a nice place with good friends and delectable eatables. Heck, at that moment I could actually think of a thousand things that I would rather be doing instead of partying …. Some of these would be ….

  • Watching DVDs in the comfort of my own home
  • Doing laundry
  • Cooking
  • Reading and re-reading books
  • Blogging
  • Sleeping
  • Washing car
  • Playing taboo at Champs

Don't get me wrong, I do like partying, but I'm really fussy when it comes to the crowd and music and 'space'. One of the best and most memorable parties I been too was the Salem Recharge (open-air of course) at Genting around 4 to 5 years back. That was what I call a real party. Cool air, plenty of space, great music and we had a nice sized group.

Gardener's Secret

Stumbled upon perfectly fabulous deals at Crabtree & Evelyn at Bangsar Village over the weekend; they had several promotions happening; all out to leverage on the Mother's Day commercialism. Well, the more competition, the better for us consumers right?

Beautifully packed coffret sets for mums ....

Pretty looking goodies up for grabs if you spend loads.

The handcream promotion really caught my eye: Get a small-sized handcream (50ml at RM43) free when you buy a large-sized one (100ml at RM73). This deal is applicable across all variants of handcreams; from Lavender to rose to the popular Gardener's Therapy. I snapped it up immediately seeing that this deal was almost too good to be true! My choice? The award-winning Gardener's Therapy of course!

Lookin' good, smellin' good, feelin' good ....

Details on the back.

An intruder! Who is this mutt who covets my handcream and interrupts my photo shoot ???

Why I love Gardener's Therapy handcream? Well, for a start, they claim that it is created for "gardener's hands"! That's some heavy duty claim! This formula features "intensively healing shea butter to sooth, nourish and protect work-roughened hands". Work-roughened hands! I like that! So serious. Not that I can claim to be a victim of domestic chores, but if this is good enough for gardeners (hard core) then, hey, it's good enough for me (kia-su)! Above all, I love the scent and the texture is rich. It might be rather heavy for those who likes a lighter touch but not as heavy as the L’Occitane Shea Butter (which I keep for pre-bedtime use as it’s heavier and richer).

The Scent? Love it! Fresh green clover, lavender, sage, rosemary and thyme. Damn, sounds good enough to eat!

I plan to get this cute set (pic below) with the 'stand' for the new home .... soooo pwetty .... will look so good in the guest bathroom, or kitchen ....

Well, for the uninitiated, Crabtree & Evelyn is not limited to just personal care such as lotions, soaps and scents. They have a wide range of home-y stuff like drawer liners, candles, cookies, tea bags, honey, preserves (jams) and even bathrobes and towels.

Apparently the cookies are really yummy though I have not tried them.
Oh but Beatrice has tried them, click here to see what she has to say :)

Paint Me Pretty!

I finally managed to book an appointment with Color Culture... I chose BVII as I was planning to get my hammam at the same time. It was a complete relaxation cum pamper-me-silly weekend!

Here's the verdict:

Good:
  • When I called them, they were pretty efficient; they even asked if I wanted a ring in advance as a reminder. And they asked if I have a preferred 'Color Artist' (which is what a manicurist here is known as)
  • The uniforms, name tags, appearance of all the artist connotes a high standard of professionalism and seriousness in what they do here.
  • The OPI color selection here far exceeds any other nail salons! Seriously.
  • This is the first salon I went to who had 2 strategically mounted TVs! They had on Discovery Travel & Living which was superb.
  • I was impressed with the Color Artist servicing a lady next to me; eventhough you can gauge that her spoken English was not good, she explained in decent English (complete with technical and medical terms) on the lady's nail fungus condition. Speaks of good training.
  • My artist was a gentle girl called Joey who did a good job and was not overly pushy to try to sell me too many things.
  • A good selection of services on their "menu" plus various "packages" to suit specific needs and budgets.
  • The freebie! I got a mini set of stuff worth RM90 upon signing up the package!

Love watching TV while I get pampered!

The free gift worth RM90 which comprise 2 cleansers, one lotion and one full sized Avoplex Cuticle Oil. And a pretty pouch!

Not so good:
  • They forgot to give me my receipt at the end of it, I had to turn back to ask for it.
  • I signed up for a package which makes me a 'member', I would prefer to have some sort of card so I can track my appointments, colors used, purchases and the name of my artist. To rely on my memory alone is rather daunting.
  • Lack of space within the salon to put my handbag and shopping bags.
  • The place is really small and may not be able to accommodate too many clients at a time, and it gets noisy when alot of people come in at the same time.
  • They are not as affordable as most neighborhood salons, but they gave me a certain level of confidence. Also, they use all imported OPI stuff, even the foot scrub, nail sanitizer and tools, which adds up to the slighter uppity price.

The end results .... see pictures of my pretty done-up nails!

For my manicure, I chose a pearlized nude shade.

For my toes; a shimmery pink, a drastic change form the usual deep vampish toe-colors I am used to.

My Lip Indulgence

I love lipglosses and I love Chanel … I've had my eye on the NEW Chanel Aqualumiere Gloss for sometime now and since I was in a "shop & splurge" mood over the weekend, *tadddaaaa* here it is!

Love: the fantastic lip brush tip (like a pro!), smooth texture, sexy shine and naturally pretty hue of "Freeze" (the shade I picked). "Freeze" is a little bit on the nude side, with a hint of brown with a light touch of shimmer, not too much, just nice.

The fine-tipped lip brush for precise application and smooth filling of color.

Lookin' yummilicious!
Ok, sorry lah, the picture is way too small as I had to crop it from my phone camera!

No love here: the really limited range of colors! Only 8 to 9 shades I think, and some were way too dark and drama for me. A tad pricey for daily use (that's why it's Chanel!) , but it's great all the same. I don't mind as long it performs in relation to the price. Retails at RM88.

Really, there's nothing like a Chanel lipgloss to make you feel oh-so-wonderfully posh and luscious! *heheh*

Blossoming Cherries!

One of my favorite brands launched yummilicious new stuff! The L'Occitane Cherry Blossom range is a big favorite of mine but I've been totally reluctant to splurge on it; till now.

Pic taken from L'Occitane.au

Like most girls, what I love most about the range is the
scent! I couldn’t bring myself to buy the fragrance all along as I had like 5 bottles of fragrances still half way through but now, I have exhausted all my fragrances (almost) so I am justified to splurge! So I skipped along to the friendly neighborhood L'Occitane to check out the new babies

What's new?
Petal Hand Cream, 75ml RM63
Cherry Eau de Toilette, 100ml RM177
Cherry Fragrant Touch Perfume, 7.5ml, whoopsie … I cannot remember the price ^_^

The verdict?
Petal Hand Cream
Light to touch, non-greasy and smells as wonderful as the original hand cream, which was launched last year at a teeny weeny 30ml size (see pic below).
I bought this for my mother-in-law, she love hand creams, she loved the scent and the non-greasy texture. I still prefer the one I have now as it's richer and my hands tend to be quite dry. But the Petal Cream is good for traveling and driving; no more sticky slippery steering wheel!
The website declares that this handcream is enriched with Shea Butter and Vitamin E and contains a cherry extract from Luberon, France. Both old and new variant contains Shea Butter; which I think is a must-have for hand creams as they are rich and nourishing enough.

My almost-gone hand cream!

The new Petal Soft Hand Cream!

Cool twist-cap means you won't misplace the cap.

Cherry Eau de Toilette:
Not to be confused with the Cherry Blossom EDT, the Cherry EDT scent is adorably sweet, fruity, very lovely, very young, (think Escada!) but alas … not for me, so I ended up buying the original Cherry Blossom anyway; loving every whiff! To me, the Cherry Blossom is delicate, fresh, feminine, a little 'country' but very wholesome; think Laura Ashley, Martha Stewart, Crabtree & Evelyn having a high tea party at Carcosa Seri Negara!

My precious classic Cherry Blossom EDT, 100ml

The new (and really sweet) Cherry EDT, 100ml.

Cherry Fragrant Touch Perfume:
The same scent but in a concentrated lotion-gel format in a convenient vial for touch ups. See pic below. It's small and cute and probably great for travel, but I bet after I buy it, I might forget about it and I won't really use it anyway. It might even get lost in my huge bottomless pit handbag. But this makes a cool gift for a sweet girlfriend!

Cherry Fragrant Touch Perfume

They have a super cool promotion now where if you buy above RM350 (Really steep!) they give you this really nice looking set with a nice Cherry Blossom pouch, compact mirror, and some other little bits of stuff, around 5 to 6 items. But I didn’t get it as I could not find anything else to make up the value, oh well. It would be nice if they could at least give out the compact mirror or pouch alone for a lesser purchase, they were soooo pretty!

Shortcake in Singapore

Shortcake was in Singapore (for work, bleahhh) and see what she picked up .... new Johnson & Johnson Naturally White Daily UV Body Lotion and Daily Exfoliating Wash! Yay! Priced at S$6.90 and S$3.50 and not available in Malaysia yet! Cool! The new packaging is so pretty, in fact they completely revamped the whole Johnson & Johnson range in Singapore, new scent and new packaging. I am a sucker for pretty packaging so naturally I succumbed!

I like the lotion, quite milky and smooth, perfect for day, not too sticky or oily. There is a faint 'sunscreen' kind of smell (like Coppertone, but much lighter) but it's manageable for me. I'm not too crazy about the Body Wash, it's thick, rich and milky with fine exfoliating beads. I'm not a big fan of grainy body washes, unless it's a scrub, and that's not for everyday use.

Johnson & Johnson Naturally White Body Lotion and Daily Exfoliating Wash

I had the luxury of staying on the 55th floor of the Swissotel at The Stamford and it was such a magnificent view. Here are some views at night and at dawn, taken with my phone cam, so naturally it's rather blur ...

My Reward!

A girl needs an excuse once in a while to buy herself something nice and extravagant! So I decided to color me pretty despite looking sallow and down from withdrawal symptoms and depression of all sorts. Presenting my latest indulgence ... The latest Bobbi Brown Nude Lip & Eye Palette!

It's my first Bobbi product, I've always liked the brand but somehow always end up in Shu or MAC instead. I've heard that Bobbi is known for nudes, browns and naturals.... and indeed they are! I am so delighted with this I've been using it 2 days in a row...

There are 4 lipstick shades; all creamy and smooth (no frost, I cannot stand frosty lipsticks!):
  • Brownie Pink
  • Cocoa
  • Beige
  • Bare
So far I love all the shades, the texture is okay for me, less drying than MAC but MAC has a more delightful scent. Nothing at all unpleasant but this lippie scent will take some getting used to.

There are 4 naturally lovely eye shadow shades:
  • Bare (matte) - good as a highlight or base
  • Naked (matte) - good as a highlight or base
  • Nude (shimmer wash) - good as a highlight
  • Buff (shimmer wash) - good as an accent shade, my favorite shade so far!
Due to the pale and nude shades, you need to wear foundation or an eye base before application otherwise you will feel as if there's nothing there! But I like nudes and pales, so it works for me!

I also lurve the luxe and shiny looking black compact! Feels so glam just looking at it!

If you think about the colors you are getting and the wonderful shadow brush and lip brush inside, the $$$ is really worth it! Only RM210 for this palette. Imagine, an individual lipstick or shadow might be around RM70 or so. So if you bought 8 x RM70 that would be RM560! Even if the actual gram-size is perhaps only half, you still pay less! Oh and that's not not even taking into consideration the 2 wonderfully useful brushes! Haha, see how I rationalise why I shop??? :)

My Secret to Rosy Flushy Cheeks!

Ok, if I'm gonna blog about it, it's no secret anymore! Well, I was introduced to this product when makeup artist Khir Khalid recommended and used it on me during a small photo shoot for a magazine sometime back. I bought one and it ROCKS! I am now at my second bottle already! I can't live without it now ... sigh.

It's the
Benefit Benetint! *applause applause* I love this stuff ... why ...?

  • it's sooooo easy to use: just draw 2 crosses on your cheeks and dab-dab-dab with fingers, right after foundation is perfect, or even on bare skin.
  • it smells soooooo GOOD! The scent perks me up, totally
  • my husband has been sniffing my cheeks cos I smell like roses!
  • it gives me a pretty stain of color that looks so natural
  • it last longer than most powder blushers I know
  • because applying powder blush sometimes can go wrong if you're too heavy handed with the brush
  • I can still apply the powder blush over Benetint for contouring for more a more 'gala' look if I want to
  • it's just 'water', no oil, not sticky, not like a gel or something gooey
If you think blushers are such a hassle, I seriously recommend this stuff. Works like a dream.

There is only one shade, but it works on all skin tones and skin types.

The price is rather steep but it can last me almost 2 to 3 months. You can get it @ RM149.00 at Paskson, Metrojaya and most good department stores in town.

What to Look for in a Nail Salon?

I really love getting my nails done ... I love the way it's so smooth and shiny and pretty and my badly bitten cuticles suddenly look picture perfect ... can almost be hand-model!

I've tried a few salons and I am hopelessly 'unfaithful' when it comes to salons, curiosity always gets the better of me. I've given it some thought and decided to list out what should we look out for when selecting a salon...
  1. Brands used: reputable professional brands are OPI, Creative, EZFlow, Jessica & Orly, they should have a good selection of colors and nail art, it shows how creative and adventurous the manicurist can be.
  2. Facilities: there should be proper tools, tables, proper lighting, built-in pedi-basins and seats.
  3. Manicurists: The boss or proprietor should always be around and also doing the work alongside with their hired hands.
  4. Hygiene: Cleanliness is key! They should have this heating disinfectants machine for towels and various tools (looks like a little microwave), cutters and cuticle trimmer should be stored into a jar or beaker with disinfectant liquid. A proper built-in pedi-spa basin is a must for me. Using a plastic basin and manually bringing in the water is a major turn off!
  5. Considerate: They should be careful to ensure you are comfy; get you a drink, transfer your bag when you move from the table to the pedi-chairs, help you put on your slippers after pedi etc. They should not be overly pushy and try to cram down this-and-that product while you are in their hands, nor try to convince you to commit packages, informing politely is good.
  6. Comfort: Cushy chairs and adjustable pedi-seats are a nice touch of luxury! One place I go to has a controllable massage function on their pedi-seats! Cool! Basic things like good lighting and just-right a/c temperature helps makes your 2 hours a blissful experience.
  7. Pricing: The market rate is around RM70 plus-minus for a basic mani plus pedi. Special treatment prices varies. Nail art varies from RM 1 - RM5 per nail depending on the ornaments or complication of the art.
  8. Focus: The salon should not attempt to do too many things. Most salons also offer waxing services, that's okay. I personally prefer a proper nail salon and not one that is also a hairdresser cum facial cum spa etc etc. Trying to do too many things comes across as less professional to me. I once did my nails in a spa place (nice spa) but the freelance manicurist cut the skin of my toe so deep that it hurts and was really red after that, thankfully it did not bleed :(
  9. Recommendation: Always ask around for recommendations from others.

Shortcake's Basic Salon Etiquette:
  • Always call and make an appointment in advance.
  • Don't ask "will this color look good on me ar?" The manicurist does not live inside your mind nor walk in your shoes. Only you can know what color suits your skin tone, your clothes, your lifestyle. If you work in a bank, maybe bright glittery turquoise is not the right choice. If you are attending a wedding, black might be frowned upon, unless the theme is "gothic bride" but quite unlikely. I bet the manicurist can't wait for you to make a quick selection so she can get on with it as there are appointments lined up. You should go there with a clear idea of what you want.
  • If you are doing your nails for a special occasion, e.g. your own wedding or Chinese New Year or Christmas party, then feel free to ask for suggestions on the popular trends. Some salons have special festive nail arts lined up, e.g. cherry blossoms or gingerbread man designs.
  • Don't be shy to bring your own favorite nail colors to the salon. Some salons even practice giving you a small discount if you BYO.
  • If you have to match an outfit badly, bring it along to match against their colors.
  • Don't change your mind after the manicurist starts painting. She will have to remove it and re-do it for you. If the first color was a strong color, you risk staining your freshly cut cuticles, what a waste of work and time.
  • Avoid wearing multiple or heavy jewelry items such as bracelets, rings, watch etc as you will need to remove them anyway.
  • Do not wear long jeans / pants etc that cannot be folded up easily. GO in shorts or something that rises easily above your knees so they can scrub your legs with ease.
  • Needless to say, when doing a pedi, do not go there with closed-toe sandals or covered shoes!
  • Avoid indulging in salon gossips and loudly declare your household problems nor grouse about your boss, you never know who knows who there!
  • Turn your phone off to silent while your hands are getting done, imagine your ringtone blasting loudly in a small peaceful salon and you can't reach into your bag cos your nails are halfway done! You can fumble around with it later when they work on your toes.
That's all I have based on my experiences and feedback from friends. Do feel free to share your thoughts or experiences as well.

These are my fav salons for now; they are pretty good:

I am quite keen to try out the new OPI boutique salons: Color Culture, they look really nice :) Check them out here: http://www.opi.com.my They actually have salons in Bangsar, Mid Valley, Curve and Pavilion. Have anyone tried them out yet? They look expensive to me. Are they any good?

Have any cool salons to share?

New Nail Salon: Twinkle Nails

I received this in my workplace mailbox, wonder how these people get my email address and spam me ... sigh. Anyway, this is surprisingly useful as it's a flyer for a nail salon called Twinkle Nails located in Metropolitan Square, Damansara Perdana, where Citibank is. I have not been there yet but the photo of their store interior looks pretty, they appear to use reputable good brands such as OPI, Creative and EZFlow. Cosy looking red chairs as well. I suppose I will pay them a visit if I'm that area and in need of mani-pedi :)

Hope this is useful for those of you who frequent this area :)

Miracle Spray!

I was given a mini sized Avene water spray (50ml) to use and I absolutely love it so much that I have been buying the BIG spray (300ml at RM53). Well, the mini is good for traveling. The water comes from a spring source in Southern France and has healing, soothing and anti-irritating properties.

If you like the refreshing feel of water on your face, you should try this out.

What the brochure recommends:
  • Eczema
  • Itching
  • Sunburn
  • After surgery
  • Rashes (baby as well)
  • And their list goes on ......

How I use it:
  • Before toner
  • Sometimes, as a toner, when I am too lazy :P
  • After my moisturiser so it feels less sticky / greasy
  • After squeezing and pinching my face *ouch*
  • When my crazy puppy scratches my legs with her sharp claws, it itches and turns red! The spray helps loads!
  • After my makeup (especially if you were too heavy-handed on the powder!)
  • After tweezing and shaving
  • As a quick refreshing mask (spray liberally and stand in front of the fan!)
The spray is in fact not cheap, but it's a worthy investment. The 300ml can last me a whole month. Available in better drugstores.
